5 out of 5 stars garmin nuvi 1490   August 31, 2010

I bought this satnav to drive through the wilds of the Gers in SW France but unfortunately, the first one gave up before I had left the wilds of SW london. Fortunately Amazon's fantastic replacement system meant that i still had one before setting off, although no time to try it out.
The fact that I'm still awarding this 5 stars in spite of that hiccup is an indication of how much I loved it.
Which magazine had recommended it and I totally see why. The most useful feature for me was the screen that popped up every time you had to change motorways in France showing the relevant motorway sign and highlighting the correct lane to take. This was my first time driving in Europe, I was alone, and this piece of equipment totally de-stressed the journey.
Couple of probs caused I suspect by my lack of time for try-out. Make sure that you choose fastest, not shortest, route otherwise you'll find yourself going cross country!
Apparently you can bluetooth your phone in to enable you to tap the screen to answer, but I haven't got around to that yet.
I was staying in a tiny hamlet in the middle of nowhere, but all the tracks were on the map unlike the borrowed Tomtom I used earlier in the year. The Garmin screen was also much easier and better marked out than the Tomtom.
Truly an excellent buy, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any-one, but particularly to any-one who wants a simple to operate piece of equipment that works effectively and isn't too expensive.

4 out of 5 stars first portable sat nav   August 29, 2010

Having changed my car that had built in sat nav I needed a full function portable one that I could use in either of my cars.
Very satisfied with product and appreciate safety camera identification and turn by turn street name information. Do not appreciate shortest route option sending me down single lane dirt tracks and annoying audible warning of exceeding 50mph average speed limit when there is no restriction.

5 out of 5 stars A* in French for Garmin 1490T   August 24, 2010

Garmin 1490T: Bought this to replace aging Garmin i3 - so naturally with such a big upgrade I was impressed with what it could do. The Bluetooth phone function is great, easy to set up and clear for both parties. The menus are all 'human friendly' and bold and clear on the big screen. We have just driven to central south France - the Lot valley and never lost reception despite being in huge gorges. The map is very well informed even with all the speed limits and camera warning which was impressive for remote France. In some cases (mainly in England) the speed limits in the Garmin have not kept up with local recent changes but the live update tools on the next model up might fix that. The live traffic warning updates work well on major routes but of course dont see tailbacks on the smaller roads, but that is due to lack of cameras (so lets not moan too much about that) In short I have had no trouble with this gizmo - you get a lot for your money and I reccommend you seriously consider buying one.

4 out of 5 stars clear and easy   August 23, 2010

Good sized screen and set up easy. voice clear. seems lots of wires when use traffic arial so looks a bit messy then though not been in traffic to know how effective the new routes/diversions are.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   August 22, 2010

I chose this product mostly based on reviews and friends advice as it is my first sat nav...
I have to say I am very happy with my choice. It's easy to use, wide screen, lane guidance (it doesn't just say which lane you need to be on but it shows you as well...)...it's wonderful to have it in the car.
I paired it with my phone as well so I can take calls whilst driving now...it's got everything you need.
I would recommend it...
(Thank you all for your reviews)
