3 out of 5 stars Refurbished Garmin Navman 205   September 8, 2010
Grumpy
I gave this item 3 stars because on the 2 occasions it worked it was easy to use and did what I expected for a good price. However the battery went flat and when I tried to use it the third time it would not switch on despite trying to charge it from 3 different sources. I contacted Garmin who could not cure the fault over the phone but said that if I returned it they would replace it in three working days. To cut along story short it takes 10 days from Garmin. I should have returned it to Amazon who would have refunded my money, and were more helpful.

4 out of 5 stars A superb little device   September 3, 2010

This was my first SatNav so nothing to compare it t0 but there we are.

Pros: It has some very nice features (I suppose common to many other Satnavs) like POIs, favourites and eco route (which is a bit inaccurate). By the time you switch it on, it is picked up by the satellites relatively fast unless, of course, you are in a tunnel or in a underground parking. What I really like is that you can pick destinations in Google maps and send them through USB (which btw, is not included) to your device...unfortunately, you cannot save routes through this process, only the destinations. In general, is a very intuitive little device, for users who are in budget and don't wont to pay for features that they are never going to use.

Cons: As mentioned by other reviewers, don't really trust the voice guidance but always have a look at the screen, too. I have noticed that when I'm approaching a big roundabout "vertically" and not "tangentially" it says "turn left". This might be logical for the satnav but not for the human brain...what it means is to turn a bit left so you enter in the roundabout otherwise you will crash...onto the roundabout. Another minus is that when travelling from Oxford to Edinburgh I couldn't make it understand that I wanted it to use the Birmingham toll road and not the ring road...it was failing either when I was trying the alternative route feature or when I was trying to do it manually.

All in all, I would certainly recommend it to all those who have no prior experience of satnavs as it's very intuitive and has a clear interface. The Google Maps thing I mentioned earlier is really fantastic but the inaccuracy in the roundabouts and inflexibility for alternative routes made me give it 4/5 stars.

Happy road trips ;-)

1 out of 5 stars Terrible ! impossible to use with a mind of its own.   September 2, 2010
Mr. D. Wilson (England. UK)
The Sat Nav arrived in good time and was well packaged with manuals etc and in superb condition. The Box clearly states that it is a refurbished unit. The problem I have had is the menu and keyboard having a totally random mind of its own. For example it can often take me six attempts to type in a postcode for example AB1 CD2 you type in AB.. fine, then press the number button to type in a number and it returns to the menu (loosing what you've just spent 5 minutes trying to type in). The keyboard has a mind of its own often pressing say "W" will print a "B". You hit the delete button and it lights up, but deletes nothing.
Similarly, the favourites menu simply disappears at will without a trace. Hitting the "Where to" button, takes you to the where to menu, with only half the menu item showing, the favourites have simply gone. I'm sure this thing must be running on Microsoft windows, because you have keep turning it of and on again.

On most menus are scroll buttons for up and down. About 80% of the time if you press the scroll arrow it looses everything you entered and returns to the menu. As I say, it typically takes several attempts to do anything and you often have to turn it on and off. The unit has been fully updated with the latest maps and firmware upgrade, but this has made no difference. I can only assume that it's either a software fault or a dodgy input screen. However, there are times when it just works perfectly, so I don't think it's hardware fault, it seems to be more like flaky software.

I have to say though that when you do eventually get your destination typed in, it does get you there with simplicity. It's pulled me out of a few confusing city centres. As one other mentioned though a glaring oversight is the lack of a distance remaining figure. It does tell you an estimated time of arrival, but you have no idea of how far you are from your destination - fairly important information.

I would highly recommend the unit, and I will get another one. However, I do think that this one is faulty. If you are buying a reconditioned unit do ensure that you test it fully. This one is going back.
